Why FolioHer Exists
Women's stories are often presented in fragments. We see the achievement, the title, the company, the milestone or the finished picture, but rarely the experiences that give those things meaning.
FolioHer exists to look closer. We document women through the identities, decisions, responsibilities, ambitions and experiences that shape who they become. We are interested in the woman behind the visible story: what she has carried, what she has learned, what she has questioned, and what has changed along the way.
Our work is rooted in the belief that a woman's story deserves more than a summary. It deserves context, curiosity and care.
The Difference Is In The Lens
There is a difference between documenting what a woman has done and documenting the woman behind it.
FolioHer looks beyond the obvious. We are interested in the experiences behind the achievement, the identity behind the ambition, the responsibility behind the role, and the decisions that rarely make it into the headline.
Our stories are not built simply to celebrate visibility. They are created to preserve perspective: the knowledge, experiences and lessons that can help another woman understand something about herself, her work, her family or the path ahead.
That is the lens through which we approach every woman we document.

What We Are Not
FolioHer is not interested in reducing women to résumés, titles, milestones or polished versions of success.
We are not here to flatten complicated journeys into neat lessons or turn real experiences into motivational soundbites.
We believe women can be ambitious and uncertain, accomplished and still becoming, strong and still learning.
The stories we document are allowed to hold all of that.
Meet the Founder
Joy Olawumi
Editorial Director, FolioHer
Joy Olawumi is a marketing strategist and the founder of FolioHer, with more than five years of experience working across startups and fast-moving businesses. Her work in marketing has taken her through different stages of building, from shaping how brands communicate and position themselves to thinking deeply about the people, stories and ideas behind the work.
Over the years, working across different startups has given Joy a close view of what it means to build something while still figuring things out. She has seen the polished version of success, but she has also seen the decisions, uncertainty, experimentation and persistence that happen long before the outcome becomes visible.
As a first child herself, Joy has always been particularly interested in the experiences that shape women beyond what is immediately visible. That curiosity sits at the heart of FolioHer: a desire to create a space where women can be documented with more context, honesty and depth, and where their experiences can become part of a larger record that others can learn from.
FolioHer is the beginning of a much larger vision for Joy. What starts with stories and editorial profiles is intended to grow into a broader way of documenting, celebrating and preserving the lives, work, knowledge and experiences of women. The ambition is not simply to tell more stories, but to build something that gives those stories the room, care and permanence they deserve.
